While You Were Out - Frequently Asked Questions

I love your e-mails, but it's likely that your question can be answered below:

1. How do you make that chair/sconce/table?

I have no idea. Your best bet is to e-mail the designer of that particular show, or if appropriate, Andrew or Leslie. Please find links to their sites on TLC.com.

2. Where can I get the radio/espresso maker/painting/chess set you gave away as a prize?

Prizes are sourced by the designers. Get in touch with the designer who did that room and ask - they'll usually remember. In most cases, I will have no clue.

3. Is Andrew single? Why don't you date Andrew?

To the first question, the answer is "no." To the second, see the answer to the first. For any more Andrew data, please get in touch with him directly through his website. A link can be found on TLC.com.

4. How do I get on the show?

Applications and all rules can be found on TLC.com

5. Can you see that my application goes to the top of the pile?

I appreciate anyone thinking I actually have any juice in this situation. This is important. Let me create some dramatic buildup. I have no, repeat no, say in choosing homeowners. It's done by producers without any involvement from me. I wish I could help, but I can't. I'm on the road, the selection process happens in NYC and is mostly about geography anyway.

6. When will you come to Canada?

I'm eager to visit Canada because I love all the e-mail I get from Canadian fans and I hear home improvement shows are big there; It's too cold to leave the house, so why not fix it up? Still, we have no plans as of yet to visit Canada. I have no control over our schedule, which is sad, because I hear many people in Cancun need redecorating help as well.

7. Where do you get your clothes?

Since they usually get covered with paint, I shop at outlets and places like American Eagle, Abercrombie & Fitch, Lucky Brand. I often wear T-shirts by Michael Stars because they don't pull or grab and jewelry from Macy's fake jewelry department. Shoes are Skechers or Puma. Splurge clothes, which get ruined faster by some sort of decorating law, are from Anthropologie, a small chain.

8. How did you get your job? How can I get into show business like you?

No two roads are alike. Hence, advice is difficult to give other than the Joseph Campbell standby, "Follow your bliss, and doors will open ..." I would add to that, get an internship somewhere if you want to write, perform as much as possible if you want to act, and just start being really bossy and wearing a baseball hat if you want to direct. Good luck.

9. Are you related to Robin Strasser, from "One Life to Live"?

Yes, she is my dad's first cousin. Isn't she great? I think we look alike, but I may be flattering myself there.

10. Who is that blonde girl that hosts the show sometimes?

That is Anna Bocci, who was the original host of the show for the first ten episodes. Premiere episodes on Friday nights at 9 p.m. will always be hosted by me, but on occasion an afternoon rerun will feature my predecessor.
